London, Day Four

Although we left London proper by 10 AM, the fourth day of our trip was still quite busy. On the way home we stopped at two sites.

The first was Hampton Court, the summer palace of Henry VIII. It was quite interesting, and now I can finally keep all of the wives straight. As a fun side-note, Hampton wasn’t built for Henry. It was built for an Archbishop, to be his house… but then Henry liked it so much that he commandeered it. Sucks for you, Wolsey.

Their Great Hall. Slightly more impressive than ours.

HIS backyard... I liked the mushroom trees

"Anne Bolyn's Gateway" (wife #2)

I just really liked this one... It's outside of the gates.

Our second stop was at Runnymede. This is the location where the Magna Carta was signed. Ironically, the monuments there were erected by the American Bar Association. The British donated the tea house down the road. There’s a monument to the Magna Carta and another to JFK. Also, an acre of land there belongs to the United States of America. Suddenly, I couldn’t drink anymore, but I could once more own a gun. Sadly, all that was there was a fence.

We had to cross this unmarked field to get to the momuments. Wonder they don't get more visitors.

Other than that, on the bus ride home I just had to finish up my homework for this weekend: Macbeth, Beowulf, The Aeneid, and a presentation on the Magna Carta. Miraculously this was all completed by that night.

That wraps it up for my weekend in London… see you next time!
