The next day was our tour of the Colosseum, Forum and Palentine Hill. That was incredible. We started with pizza for breakfast in the shadow of the Colosseum. Then, to the Colosseum (You know, where the Vatican stole most of its marble from, until one of the Popes said no).
All those columns were covered by a wooden floor and sand. Elevators were used to make men and animals appear wherever on the arena floor.
Later the Forums, which are much more ruined…
Except for the temples, because they were frequently converted to churches. Like this one. That door is circa 200.
And, the believed final resting place of Julius Caesar (location of his pyre in what became his temple) still gets flowers.
And the top of Palentine Hill, the ancient and modern center of politics in Italy.
(This is NOT overlooking anything... the view was prettier in the other direction XD )
This day we saved our legs and took a nap right after lunch. Then we walked to the Spanish Steps, Villa Medici, and this gorgeous little park. Again, my favorite part of the day was exploring where the locals, not the tourists, go.
There were a bunch of skaters in the park, and this one guy was at least 70 and spinning around under the level of those traffic cones. I was impressed.
Somehow we managed to eat dinner at an Irish pub again, and get Italian food again. Carbonara this time. Yum. We watched football and BBC that night.
Thus ended our last real day in Rome. The next day was spent travelling: planes, trains, automobiles, AND a tube. I was sick and miserable, but doing better now. Off to the massive amount of homework I didn’t do this weekend~
Wish me luck…
